When Nintendo revealed their Wii console, it was thought to be brave new territory in terms of motion control for video games consoles. However, in practice, the Wii did not entirely live up to expectations. Years later Microsoft debuted what was called Project Natal, which is what we now know as the Xbox Kinect. Kinect is a way of gaming without the use of a controller. Instead, the gamer is the controller, utilizing their body to play the games. But just how exactly does the Kinect stack up? Here are the pros and cons of the add-on and whether or not it makes for great gaming.

Kinect works by scanning the immediate area for the gamer. After it has recognized the gamer, it keeps track of the movements of the gamer and uses those movements to interact with the game itself. As previously stated, what makes Kinect so unique is the fact that the gamer is the controller. There is no need for buttons or peripherals to play a Kinect game.

So the question becomes: Does Kinect work as well as one might think it would? The answer is yes and no. Depending entirely on the game, Kinect can work smoothly and accurately to the movements of the gamer, or it can be unresponsive. It depends largely on how well developed the software of each game is.

Kinect comes with one disk based game and download codes for two downloadable games. The disk based game is Kinect Adventures and the two downloadable games are Fruit Ninja Kinect and the Gunstringer. Kinect Adventures is, unfortunately, not a very good example of the capabilities of Kinect. The controls are not very responsive to the movements of the players, and many gamers felt it was the Xbox response to Wii sports. However, the other two games, The Gunstringer and Fruit Ninja Kinect are great fun.

Fruit Ninja Kinect is relatively simple in concept: Fruit flies in the air, and the player swipes their hands across the screen to cut it in half. The best thing about this game is that the controls are very responsive, which gives the gamer plenty of control. It is fast paced and very fun.

The Gunstringer is essentially a Western shooter game, with the twist that the main character is a marionette. Utilizing various controls that allow you to move the Gunstringer, have him shoot enemies, and even some melee combat, players get to take part in the game’s action in a way they wouldn’t be able to with a controller. The fast paced action is a great rush for gamers looking for a little excitement.

So you see, the Xbox Kinect is a product that has a lot going for it. The controls are usually responsive and fast, and there is a good starting line of games to go with it. You should, however, keep in mind that Kinect is only as fun as the games that go with it, so in that regard be sure that the games you buy for it are good. Otherwise you would be wasting your money.
